Finishing

Edge banding: the finish that makes the difference

A sawn edge shows the core. Edge banding in the same colour as the decor turns a panel into a finished furniture component. We apply the banding by machine: tight, straight and durably bonded.

Colour

Every decor comes with matching edge banding, including wood decors and textures.

Thickness

1 mm for sides, 2 mm for fronts. Matt and high-gloss boards get 1 mm.

Dimensions

You enter the finished size. We allow for the thickness of the banding.

Price

1 mm €4.84 and 2 mm €7.26 per metre, incl. VAT.

Where to edge band?Advice
Front edges and frontsAlways, preferably 2 mm
Visible side and top edgesYes, 1 mm is usually enough
ShelvesFront edge only, unless the side edge is visible
Back edges and hidden edgesNot needed

Tips

Tips for working with MDF

Prime the edges

MDF edges soak up more paint than the face. Seal the edges first with a primer or filler and sand lightly between coats; that way you get an even finish.

Pre-drill for screws

Always pre-drill screw holes in board material, especially close to the edge. This stops the core from splitting or breaking out.

Choose MR in damp rooms

In the kitchen or bathroom, or for window sills, moisture-resistant MDF is the safe choice. Standard MDF swells when it gets wet.

Saw cut and offcuts

A 4.5 mm saw cut is lost between parts. The configurator allows for this automatically and arranges your parts on the board as efficiently as possible.

Why MDF?

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Flat and even. No grain or knots: a clean, smooth surface.
  • Easy to work. Cuts, mills and profiles cleanly.
  • Excellent for painting. Especially with primer foil, you quickly get a smooth lacquered finish.

Limitations

  • Sensitive to moisture. In damp rooms, choose moisture-resistant MDF.
  • Heavier than chipboard. Its high density means an MDF board weighs more.

Also cut to size

What do MDF MR and FR mean?

MR stands for Moisture Resistant: MDF bonded with moisture-resistant glue for damp rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms. FR stands for Fire Retardant: MDF with fire-retardant additives for applications with stricter fire safety requirements.

What is primer foil?

A smooth, thin primer foil on the MDF. Paint and lacquer adhere well to it, and you need less preparation than with bare MDF.

Can I use MDF outdoors?

No, even moisture-resistant MDF is meant for indoor use. For outdoors, you're better off choosing plywood bonded with waterproof glue, or film-faced plywood.

Does MDF get edge banding?

Melamine-faced MDF comes with matching edge banding in 1 or 2 mm. For primed MDF (with paint-ready foil), you can choose 1 mm edge banding. Bare MDF is usually painted and is not edge banded.

How do I order MDF cut to size?

Choose the board and thickness, enter your net dimensions and quantities in the cutting list, and you'll instantly see the cutting layout and the price. Pay securely with iDEAL, Bancontact or credit card. The delivery time is approx. 2 weeks.

What are the minimum and maximum sizes?

Parts must be at least 25 mm, and the short side can be at most 1,500 mm. The maximum length is the length of the board.
