Types

Which plywood should you choose?

Plywood is made of thin wood veneers glued crosswise on top of each other. This build-up makes the board strong and dimensionally stable. The wood species determines the weight, strength and appearance.

Tips

Tips for working with plywood

Indoors or outdoors?

For outdoor use, choose plywood with a waterproof (WBP or exterior) bond, such as okoume or birch. Outdoors, always finish the edges and faces with paint or varnish.

Pre-drill for screws

Always pre-drill screw holes in board material, especially close to the edge. This stops the core from splitting or breaking out.

Face side

With B/BB, the B side is the better-looking one. Bear this in mind when fitting visible parts.

Saw cut and offcuts

A 4.5 mm saw cut is lost between parts. The configurator allows for this automatically and arranges your parts on the board as efficiently as possible.

Why plywood?

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Strong and dimensionally stable. Thanks to the cross-laminated construction, the board barely moves.
  • Holds screws well. Even in the edge, better than chipboard or MDF.
  • Outdoor use too. Versions with a waterproof bond are suitable for exterior use.

Limitations

  • Price. More expensive than chipboard or MDF of the same thickness.
  • Natural characteristics. Knots and colour variation are part of the wood.

Also cut to size

What do B/BB and CP/CP mean?

That's the grade of the two outer faces. B is an attractive visible face with few features; BB may have small repairs. CP may contain natural features such as small knots and colour variation; suitable for structural work.

What does WBP or exterior bonded mean?

A waterproof bond that withstands moisture and changing weather conditions. Plywood bonded this way is suitable for outdoor use, provided you finish it properly.

Which plywood is the lightest?

Poplar and okoume are the lightest. Birch is the heaviest, but also the strongest and hardest.

Can I also order full boards?

Yes, you can also add boards up to 3100 × 1530 mm to your cutting list as a full board.

How do I order plywood cut to size?
